About Suzi:
Suzi Schaefers, master trainer at Canine Psychology Center, has been training dogs for 25 years and knows many methods and techniques with which to help you train/rehabilitate your dog(s). Suzi will customize your dog's training/rehabilitation to meet the individual needs of your dog(s), as well as the specifications of you and your family. Please remember that every dog is different and each one often requires a different method of training, positive/negative reinforcement and training equipment.
Suzi specializes in canine aggression rehabilitation and canine behavior modification
Suzi started out 'collecting' stray dogs as a very young child, much to her parents' dismay, and searching relentlessly in shelters, walking the neighborhoods with the dogs, even making 'cold' phone calls in an attempt to find the dogs' owners. One of these stray dogs ended up staying with the Schaefers and became the family dog, 'Tiger'. 'Tiger' can be seen on the 'lost loved ones' page of this website.
This started Suzi's wonderful journey to becoming the professional she is today. The first 'dog job' that she had was delivering guard dogs around the city of Denver for the Colorado Dog Academy with head trainer Dave Jensen from 1985 to 1987. These were not personal protection dogs, but guard dogs that would attack anyone or anything within tooth range. Suzi learned how to work with extremely aggressive dogs from day one and in many situations. She also learned how to take a bite from very powerful guard dogs (without injuring the dogs or herself) while wearing the attack sleeve or the attack suit.
The next stop was Bel-Rea Institute of Animal Technology. Suzi's goal at the time was to become a veterinary technician. She attended Bel-Rea from 1988 to 1991. She learned so much about basic animal health, conformation and nutrition, which she uses today to guide her clients on basic health care, grooming and nutrition. After school, the call back to dog training was stronger than the call to work in the veterinary world!
After Bel-Rea, Suzi went to work with the Canine Behavior Modification Center in Boulder, CO with head trainer Wendy Pool from 1991 to 1992.
Next in her dog training career was American School of Dog Training in Aurora, CO from 1992 - 1996 - with Bob Eckhardt as a boss, trainer and mentor, Suzi learned MANY training methods while at ASDT, mostly working on basic and advance obedience, protection training and behavior modification, as well as how to run a successful dog training business. Bob now owns Broadview Kennels in Aurora, CO with 100 dog kennels, a cat area, grooming facility and is right next to Broadview Veterinary Hospital. Broadview Kennels is the ONLY place that Suzi will leave her own dogs when she needs boarding services! 303-755-0471.
Starting 6/26/96 Suzi made the life changing decision to open her own dog training business in Morrison, CO. The first name of the business was 'Suzi's Custom Dog Training'. Next came 'Canine Headquarters' and finally, when Suzi had honed her skills in aggression rehabilitation and behavior modification, as well as the more difficult task of training the humans, the name was permanently changed to Canine Psychology Center.
Suzi has grown the business into a very successful 'rescue' of sorts and people from all over the US and Canada send/bring their dogs to Suzi for aggression rehabilitation. References available upon request.
Suzi has been running her own dog training business for over 15 years and would never do anything else! When she is physically incapable of doing so, she will continue to offer consultations and evaluations well into the future.
Other:
Whether your dog is aggressive toward other dogs, other people or even you and your family Canine Psychology Center (CPC) can help you train and 'reprogram' your dog to become a balanced and stable member of your family and society.
All dogs, especially aggressive dogs, should be given the chance to become balanced, stable and happy. Please don't euthanise your dog simply because people are telling you to. CPC knows how to rehabilitate even the most severe aggression cases! Click here to view CPC's dog training philosophy.
Formal dog training should be part of every dog's life, not just an aggressive or ill-mannered dog. The time to start formal training is when a puppy is 8 to 10 weeks of age, not when the adult dog is 1 or 4 years of age. Don't let your breeder or veterinarian tell you that your new pup should not be socialized or start formal training until after 3 months of age due to vaccination reasons. CPC is adamant about updated vaccination and clean fecal requirements and will not put any puppy or dog in danger of becoming ill.
Don't let anyone tell you that obedience training is too harsh for puppies! There are so many methods to meet the needs of every dog. Basic puppy obedience is done with all positive motivation and food treats if the owner allows it. Don't let anyone tell you that your 'senior' dog is too old to train, either! There is no such thing as "you can't teach an old dog new tricks"!
There is a very critical socialization period in a puppy's life - from age 6 weeks to 16 weeks - if your pup is not already started in formal training by 16 weeks of age it will become more and more difficult for the animal to be receptive to new procedures and commands as it ages. By the time your pup is 6 months of age it has already begun learning habits to live by from you, your family, your friends and your other dogs.
CPC offers several dog training programs to meet the individual needs of your dog and your family. The best way to find out which program is right for you is to contact CPC and schedule a private evaluation lesson with your dog and your family.
When you bring a dog into your home it is your responsibility to make sure he/she is well mannered, under control and a safe dog around children, dogs, other animals and strangers. If you lack the dog training experience required to train or rehabilitate your own dog, you shouldn't even try. Please, seek the help of a professional dog trainer like Suzi Schaefers, owner of Canine Psychology Center in Pine, CO.
